A total of eleven of this class were built for the French Navy between 1964 and 1975. An additional three were built for the Pakistan Navy, four for the Portuguese Navy, three for the South African Navy, and four for the Spanish Navy. Two of the French boats, Minerve and Eurydice , sank accidentally in January 1968 and March 1970, respectively, and brought all foreign sales to an end. The cause of the sinkings was eventually assessed to have been a faulty snorkel design. The Daphné -class submarines were fitted with eight forward fixed torpedo tubes and four rear-firing fixed “auto-defense” stern torpedo tubes. Torpedoes loaded in the forward tubes were “full length” French 550-mm type (21.7 inch diameter) anti-ship/anti-submarine torpedoes, while those loaded in the rear tubes were shortened 550-mm torpedoes to be used against enemy submarines in a self-defense role. All “warshot” torpedoes were loaded externally prior to an operational patrol, with the submarine not fitted with either a torpedo room or the storage of any internal extra torpedoes. Up to 24 Thomson Sintra TSM 3510 (MCC 23) magnetic/acoustic mines could be loaded in place of the torpedoes for submerged minelaying operations. Typical manning was six officers and 39 ratings. Diesel-electric propulsion was provided by two French SEMT-Pielstick diesel engines delivering 1820 kW (2,440 bhp) and two electric propulstion motors delivering 1940 kW (2,600 bhp) to two shafts. Maximum speed was 13.5 knots surfaced, and 16 knots submerged, with an operational diving depth of 300 meters (985 feet) and maximum depth of 575 meters (1,885 feet). Range was 18500 kilometers (11,500 miles) at 7 knots surfaced, or 5560 kilometers (3,455 miles) at 7 knots while snorkeling. The kit has alternate parts to allow the submarine to built as either an earlier (pre-refit) Daphné -class boat with the DUUA-1 hull-mounted active/passive sonar, or with the later bulbous DUUA-2B sonar set. Decals allow the submarine to be identified as Daphné (S641), Diane (S642), Doris (S643), Flore (S645), Galatée (S646), Junon (S648), Vénus (S649), Psyché (S650), or Sirène (S651).
